The German Press: “İstanbul New Airport Will Change the Equilibrium”

The İstanbul New Airport was praised in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, one of Germany’s most widely circulating newspapers.

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the winner of the “Year’s Best International Newspaper” award four times in the last eight years, has published a commentary saying that the İstanbul New Airport, which the whole world has its eyes on, will be upstaging the Frankfurt Airport once it opens.

While the construction work on the İstanbul  New Airport, the biggest airport project in the world to be built from scratch, is going on at full speed, one of the foremost newspapers in the German press, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung gave the new airport project wide coverage in its Sunday, March 26 supplement (FAS), praising the project as İstanbul’s future center of attraction.

The newspaper’s editor Dyrk Scherff, the author of the news story, wrote that Turkey was attracting the attention of the entire world with the projects it has been launching over the recent period, referring to the  İstanbul New Airport by saying that “this is where the heart of the world’s air traffic will be beating.” Underlining that the İstanbul New Airport was situated in a geographically sound location, the German journalist Dyrk Scherff defined the project as an ideal stop for passengers on connecting flights from Europe to Asia. The news story pointed out that people living in Stuttgart, Köln or Hamburg had to travel on connecting flights to reach a destination and flying via Turkey would save time and reduce costs.

Dyrk Scherff said in the news story that he viewed İstanbul as already the world’s largest aviation center, adding that when the first stage of the İstanbul New Airport was finished, its  passenger capacity would be 90 million. He spoke with praise about the fact that İstanbul would be boasting of an airport larger than London’s Heathrow, and as the largest airport in Europe, would reach a capacity that is 30 percent greater than Frankfurt’s.

The news story compared the project with examples around the world, calling attention to how the İstanbul New Airport started to be built 8 years ago, stating that it will however be completed before the new Berlin Airport and that the airport will be as big as Hanau, a city with a population of 100,000.

The article stated that the Frankfurt Airport would be in fear of losing its position with the commissioning of the İstanbul New Airport, commenting that the center that would connecting the entire world would be accommodating 200 million or more passengers when completed. The journalist remarked that this project reinforced Turkey’s national pride and desire to be powerful. The article also asserted that Turkish Airlines had captured growth over and beyond expectations, referring to Napoleon’s remark that “If the world were a country, Constantinople would be its capital.”
